(almost) gone, but not forgotten

I remember driving home one December afternoon, listening to Ruth Reichl talking about the holiday cookie issue on the Leonard Lopate show. Years tend to meld into one another, so I honestly couldn't say if it was last or perhaps the year before. What I do know is I never imagined a holiday season without Gourmet. Every time I make a cookie, I hear Reichl's words ring in my ears "you'd be amazed what even a 1/4 teaspoon of salt can do for a recipe". For some reason that stuck with me, and it's true. It wakes up the other flavors.

Once Gourmet's 68-year run comes to an end with the November 2009 issue, we'll all get to see Reichl in her PBS series Gourmet's Adventures with Ruth—and it's sure to rake in ratings higher than expected now that readers have no place to call home…or do they? I'm not ready to let that legacy go. Lucky for me, I've got two gals that feel the same way, so we'd like to introduce you to Gourmet, unbound. Start looking through your old December issues because come December 2009, we'll all have a home away from home. This holiday season, let's put on the ultimate bake off to celebrate all Gourmet meant to each and every one of us. And come January, we'll tip our hats to more past issues, and February, well, I think you're getting the idea. That's right, because as one of the brainwomen on this project said "they can kick us out their offices, but they can't kick us out of our kitchens". So join me and some fellow bloggers on the journey of a lifetime…even if it was a short-lived one.

If you'd like to hop on board for the ride, drop a line to Sassy Radish, or follow Gourmet, unbound on twitter for more details.

My personal recipe-binders are stuffed with Gourmet’s holiday cookies from the last 20 years. I am on board for this project, whatever it might be, because it would be good to have (virtual) company in the kitchen during the holiday bake-a-thon. Excited to see how this pans out. 🙂

I’m really wishing I hadn’t cleaned out all of my old food magazines recently. It was only a few weeks before the announcement that I cleaned off my shelves to make room for new magazines. Ugh! Sounds like a lot of fun… I’d love to participate if I can get my hands on some of the old recipes!

I’m SO in on this. I went through the house and collected all the back issues I could find this weekend. (Sadly, only back to 2007, but my husband assures me that I didn’t let him throw many away, and we have others in the garage.) I’m looking back on them now as if they’re precious jewels.
